6.0There was a particular smell once I entered the building. Somehow was even stronger, if not different once I got to my room. The area was nice, considering Oakland's reputation. But since it was in the downtown area, it was easy to settle in. Being close to the bus and bus system was benefiting. Not a wide range of restaurants though. Or at least some that stay open past a certain time. I suppose that's because of the homeless people in the area. But not at many as other say there are. Overall, if you manage to keep to yourself and go about your business, you can have a good time residing in there for a night or two.

4.0I wanted to stay in a non-chain independent hotel. Unfortunately, this hotel has not been maintained in years. Missing paint, ancient elevator, very old fixtures, very old rugs, no proper bathrooms (sinks in the bedroom), not even glasses (plastic or otherwise) in the rooms. There was only one staff person at the hotel (same person all day and night). She was great and helpful, but the situation was odd. Also, they said there would be breakfast (coffee and pastry), but there was never anything there despite the time in the morning. There was never even a place where it could have been ....
