Extremely unprofessional and distressing treatment regarding my service dog

It is right by the beach.

− I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach Oceanfront from June 13 to June 14, 2026. Unfortunately, an incident during checkout completely overshadowed our stay. I was unable to post this review sooner because I have been working extensively and did not have the time to sit down and write a proper account of what happened. However, I felt it was important to share this experience. A front desk employee, whose name I believe was Missy, questioned whether my dog was genuinely a service dog because he had barked while we were away from the room for approximately 30 minutes. I explained that we had recently moved from Brazil to Florida and that the transition had been overwhelming for him while he was adapting to a new environment. Rather than addressing the situation respectfully, she asked me what disorder I had that required a service dog. I found this question invasive, humiliating, and entirely inappropriate. When I explained that my service dog assists me with anxiety and that this had been determined with the support of my psychiatrist, she dismissed my explanation and told me that anxiety was not a valid reason to have a service dog. Her tone was rude, confrontational, and accusatory, and she repeatedly made us feel as though we were being dishonest. I even offered to show her documentation from my psychiatrist, but she refused to look at it. Despite this, the hotel charged us a $75 fee for the dog. I understand that hotel employees may need to address concerns involving an animal, but guests should never be interrogated about private medical matters, belittled, or treated as though they are lying. This interaction showed a serious lack of sensitivity, professionalism, and basic human compassion. Based on the way we were treated, I would never recommend this property, particularly to guests who travel with service animals.
