A spectacular 1980s mega-resort slowly losing its magic
6.0Hilton Waikoloa Village is basically the pinnacle of 1980s mega-resort design: monorails, grandeur, spectacle, and all of it wrapped in a very specific late-80s skin. I genuinely appreciated the Christopher B. Hemmeter design. It really does feel like a Disney-style resort dropped onto the Hawaiian coastline. That said, the resort’s age is showing. During my July 2026 visit, only one monorail train appeared to be running at a time. Because of that, the train basically ping-ponged between the two ends of the resort. Waiting for it was often longer than just walking, and the walks are not short. We’re talking long resort corridors that feel closer to miles than yards, especially with luggage or a stroller. The monorail also is not ideal for luggage or strollers. There is no flat, easy roll-on entry. You have to deal with large steps to get into the train, which makes it clunky if you’re carrying bags or managing a kid. The bigger disappointment is that the entire boat system is closed. The waterways had a lot of algae and visible overgrowth, and they looked poorly maintained. It’s unfortunate because the boats were such a signature Hemmeter feature. You can even see the boats sitting on trailers in the self-service parking lot, baking in the Hawaiian sun. That was honestly kind of sad to see. Most of the resort is relatively clean, but a lot of it feels like it has not been meaningfully updated since opening in the late 1980s. The flagship water slide at Kohala Pool was closed and appeared to be closed long-term. Some waterfall features around the property were only partially operating. And the drainage near the bathroom caves at Kona Pool was completely clogged, which meant guests had to walk through wet, dirty bathroom footprints tracking out from the restroom area. Not great. I really hope this is not a sign of the inevitable slow decline of this mega-resort concept, because the bones of the place are still incredible. I wish Hilton would lean harder into the heritage of the resort instead of letting the most unique features fade away. The history, architecture, and design influences are a major selling point. At this point, nearly 40 years after its opening, the resort itself should be treated as part of the museum experience. Hilton should restore it to its former glory and put the spectacle front and center again. This place is genuinely unique. It deserves better than slowly becoming decrepit over time.
Disappointing and Dirty Towels
4.0This resort consistently gave the "I don't care" attitude. Towel in bathroom was filthy - it looked like someone had wiped the floor with it. I had already used a towel and that just made me queasy thinking of what might have been on that one! We brought it to front desk's attention and they offered new towels but at that point I didn't trust that those would be clean and I was afraid of something worse happening if the cleaning staff found out that we complained. The front desk woman's attitude was condescending. The next day we spoke with the manager and his response was "well, what do you want me to do about it?" acting like it was somehow my fault. Also, the tram was not working (from past reviews it appears this is very common). It was literally a half mile walk to our hotel room. At least the hallway had some interesting artifacts and art work to look at while you slogged along n the heat. Very expensive - 4 pina coladas and a small plate of chicken wings - $120!!! We discovered Kings market (a shuttle ride away) and their food was good and reasonably priced and with a wide selection. This place seems to be living on past glory. Also, everything shuts down very early. I gave it 2 stars for the artwork and the pools.
Very pleasant staff that made our honeymoon more special

Sprawling tropical resort
10.0This was my fourth stay at Hilton Waikoloa Village after attending conferences here in previous years, and I left just as impressed as the first time. I know this property gets mixed reviews, but I think a lot of that comes down to expectations. Yes, the canal boats are no longer operating, and I do miss them a bit. They added to the atmosphere. That said, they were never the most efficient way to get around such a large property anyway. The tram is still available, and while it isn't the fastest, this resort is really meant to be explored on foot. Even with our 6- and 11-year-old, we had no trouble getting around. The beautifully landscaped grounds, artwork, and wildlife make the walks part of the experience rather than an inconvenience. We saw many sea turtles, rays, fish in the lagoon, dolphins (Dolphin Quest part of the resort), birds, etc. One of the highlights of our stay was the exceptional service. Chas at the front desk was genuinely outstanding, friendly, welcoming, and incredibly helpful from the moment we arrived. She made us feel appreciated as returning Diamond members and set the tone for a wonderful vacation when we checked in. This resort spans more than 60 acres, so yes, you'll do a fair amount of walking. But every stroll takes you past tropical gardens, sculptures, wildlife, ocean views, and quiet places to relax. We enjoyed having our morning coffee from our balcony, spending time at Buddha Point listening to the waves, and spectacular sunsets. The grounds are very well maintained. Our room was clean and comfortable, and housekeeping did a great job throughout our stay. Just note that daily housekeeping isn't automatic, so you'll want to schedule service if you'd like it during your stay. We also had a fantastic dinner at Nui Italian. The food was excellent, and it's hard to beat the combination of great service, delicious food, and sunset views. Lunches were excellent at the Lagoon Grill/marketplace. One thing I think visitors should keep in mind is that this is Hawaii. Food, drinks, and resort amenities are expensive throughout the islands, and not just at this resort. We knew what to expect and budgeted accordingly. One tip for frequent Hilton travelers, this is also an excellent property to redeem Hilton Honors points, especially since award stays waive the resort fee. No resort is perfect, but Hilton Waikoloa Village offers a unique experience that's unlike anywhere else. If you come expecting a sprawling tropical resort, beautiful scenery, and a place to slow down and enjoy Hawaii, I think you'll have a wonderful stay. After four visits, we certainly have and we'll happily return again.
This place is terrible
2.0Didn't want to spend time in room. Everything in room is old and looks out over a roof. This hotel mat have been nice in the 80s but is so run down and food and coffee are terrible and overpriced.
Hilton Waikoloa: A Stay Full of Failures and Frustrations
2.0If you’re considering this resort for a relaxing family vacation, please be aware of several major issues we experienced. Our AC was broken upon arrival, and despite the hotel being under 70% occupancy, we were told we had to wait a night because housekeeping couldn’t prepare another room. An engineer who was incredibly kind had to piece together parts from discontinued units just to get it working. It failed again the next night, and we were moved to another tower, losing our ocean‑view room. After the AC failed a second time, we ultimately left for the Marriott next door. Transportation is heavily advertised, but not functioning. The boat tram was completely out of service, with signs stating it wasn’t operating and the entire water route covered in overgrown algae clearly unused for a long time. The regular tram came roughly every 30-40 minutes, so expect to walk everywhere. Cleanliness and housekeeping were the biggest concerns. We found dead bugs in the bed and bathroom, stained bedding and towels, and even ants inside snacks purchased from the on‑site shop (which staff refused to refund without a receipt). Our “luxury” cabana wasn’t cleaned as there were used towels, dirt piles, plastic cups, and even used bandages were left behind. The room furniture still had drink residue and dust. The end tables hadn’t been cleaned in a while. Food options were extremely limited, with the bar‑food location not cooking on multiple nights. The only positive was Carter, a manager who genuinely tried to help and showed excellent hospitality. The lagoon and Dolphin Quest were wonderful for our son, but the overall experience was stressful and far below Hilton standards. For the price, you should be able to rest comfortably and we couldn’t.
