Good but not outstanding
7.0Location/outer grounds was lovely. Food was great although a little expensive. One particular member of staff was a breath of fresh air, very funny and helpful in multiple parts of the hotel not just her main department. So that made the visit memorable, thanks Tino! (Hope I got the name right)
− Some of the staff seemed a little flustered/lack of care. Not a huge issue but shame when others are going above and beyond. The rooms were a bit run down compared to the common areas, location and grounds.
Nice area and gardens staff great
7.0− Place needs a make over looking tired
Happy with the short stay, top rated staff at the hotel!
8.0The hotel matched both the description and our expectations, so we were very happy with our stay. Yes, the hotel is a little dated, but that's part of its charm. It has its own character, and at times it felt like we were staying at Speke Hall. The beds were very comfortable, and our request for a quiet room was accommodated perfectly. We both slept like babies. The shower and bathroom were absolutely fine, and everything was clean and well maintained. A special mention goes to the staff, who were brilliant throughout our stay. They answered all our questions and really went the extra mile at breakfast. As we had to leave very early for my son's karting competition, a member of staff kindly offered to prepare some warm toast for my son (despite kitchen wasn't fully running yet). While we were packing up our gear, she also made me a bacon and sausage sandwich, carefully wrapped it to take away, and made sure I wouldn't go hungry later. That thoughtful gesture was truly appreciated so thank you very much! The gardens around the hotel were lovely, and the location suited our needs perfectly. If my son is racing in the area again next year, we'd be very happy to stay here again.
− The corridors leading to our room felt a little creepy and could do with some updating to better match the hotel's character and atmosphere.
A charming hotel with beautiful grounds, wonderful staff, excellent food, and welcoming atmosphere
10.0We really enjoyed our second stay here and would happily return. The hotel is full of character, with beautiful grounds, lovely gardens and a charming interior that gives it a unique atmosphere. Our room was comfortable, the bed was great, and we had everything we needed for our stay. The food was absolutely delicious, and every member of staff we met was warm, friendly and incredibly helpful, making us feel very welcome throughout our stay.
− The hotel could benefit from a little TLC in places, but this didn't detract from our overall experience. If you appreciate historic buildings, peaceful surroundings and excellent hospitality, this is a lovely place to stay.
I chose the hotel for its location as on the outskirts of Cleator/Cleator Moor as my family were originally from the
8.0It is a lovely period property in a great setting & the staff were very friendly & helpful - there was a nice bar & a couple of seating areas - the dining room was very pleasant & food pretty good
− It is badly in need of renovation/restoration - so much more could be done to make the gardens more accessible - although it was an ok price I felt that breakfast should have been included & also carried on a little later - as we were on a break we didn’t want to get up particularly early so didn’t bother with breakfast
Victorian hotel past its best with a whiff of Fawlty Towers!
6.0Comfortable bed.
− Cold shower. Burnt eggs at breakfast. Understaffed and undertrained staff. Tiny evening meal, 45 mins late and massively overpriced.
