9.0Breakfast was very good. Fresh scrambled eggs and fried eggs were excellent. All the food was good although you had to eat everything you take at the place they served breakfast. Room was ok but a bit dark.
Rodeway Inn and Barstow
10.0The area known as Lenwood, with its newer motels, fast food joints and outlet mall somewhat distracts from the old fashioned and historic locations of central Barstow where a significant section of Route 66 still remains. The town may not boast about its Route 66 locations but they are ever present and remarkable. Tasteful signage marks the mother road, the original Del Taco is just off the main street, the Route 66 Museum is a couple of blocks to the north in the towns original train station which also served as a, now perfectly renovated to period looks, Harvey House and is still in operation. Numerous old fashioned style motels line Main Street including the family operated Roadway Inn with parking in front of the downstairs rooms as was so common in days past. What I love about this establishment are the owners who are friendly and full of pride as can be. The motel is clean and well-priced with all the basics including a well-equipped workout room. The owners actually cook the breakfast eggs and waffles in real time as guests request – where does that happen anymore? To top it off, our favorite Mexican restaurant in town, Lola’s, is directly across the street and open three meals a day. Since so much car traffic stays on Interstate 15, jaywalking Route 66 is a breeze. Don’t be one who whizzes past Barstow on the way to Las Vegas, sights east, or west to Los Angeles, stop in and enjoy what it has to offer.
