High cost hotel giving a low budget experience

4.0

The location of the hotel is good and we managed to park in the hotel car park. Check in was not smooth, first receptionist said that we didn’t have a reservation, we did. The room was tired, old looking furniture and a stained carpet. The bed was comfortable. The real low point was breakfast. We arrived to a room full of staff but no tables were being cleared. We chose a table that had been half cleared and did the rest ourselves. Coffee was self service. The first machine was not working, the second machine gave a mug of the weakest coffee as the machine had run out of beans. For tea there was a station for self service. The hot water jug was empty. I made use of the coffee machines that could provide hot water. I returned for mlk, again an empty jug. A member of staff disappeared to fill it for me. She took the longest time to get a refill. The cooked breakfast options were slim. The baskets containing pastries had one miniature croissant left, nothing was being refilled. As we started to eat the food tasted horrible. We aren’t massively fussy but it was cold and just tasted odd. At this point we stopped eating and went to Bill’s restaurant for a really good breakfast. If you have night away you want a breakfast you can enjoy in the morning. If you stay here do yourself a favour and eat breakfast in town. Better still maybe stay in a hotel that puts in a bit more effort, for the price this was definitely not worth it.

Poor experience

4.0

I requested a room no higher then the 3rd floor as my sister didn’t like heights, when I got too the hotel they said sorry the 3rd floor is out of action so they put us on the 17th floor not happy about that. The room had dirty marks on the walls and wardrobe and black marks in the bath. Will not stay here again

Unfriendly Reception Team with Poor Breakfast

4.0

When we walked in the receptionist looked up as if we were disturbing him. He couldn't find our booking (they had just had a systems update) and instead of maybe suggesting a coffee or even taking a seat (I walk with the aid of a stick) we had to stand their for 40 minutes whilst he faffed about trying to ring someone. Eventually we go booked in: he upgraded us to an executive room which apart from having a larger bed was basic. Two teabags and two milks in the tray. A shower over a bath which you had to climb into and a toilet that didn't flush properly. We had breakfast included in our booking but were challenged on arrival as the system hadn't tied up. Waiter at breakfast was charming and a lovely guy but the breakfast was abysmal. There was no buffet bar as there were too few people staying so I thought great a cooked to order meal. How wrong was I. I ordered a full English with a fried egg and received bacon, two fried eggs, scramble eggs (which I hate) and mushrooms so had to ask for sausage and beans. Just as we were finishing ours the table next to us asked for scrambled eggs with their full English (which came with everything this time apart from scrambled eggs!) and then another table didn't get there's at all. Wouldn't have been so bad but the food was not hot, and had obviously just been laying around in the kitchen. We were going to the Utilita venue so chose this hotel as it was so close. I would advise you to avoid it at all costs

Below par hotel

6.0

A group of friends and I stayed here for a couple of nights over a weekend. The hotel is situated well in central Cardiff, but the standard I would expect for a luxury brand fell below expectations. The room was basic and unattractive and the overnight maid service left us with uncleaned cups, no tea bags were replaced nor were the bins emptied. The breakfast was really good, but the hotel needs some improvement.

Overpriced but convenient

6.0

Went to see Bryan Adams at the Utilita Arena. Hotel is a good 15 minute walk from the castle and is on a main road , it's literally 2 minutes from the arena (you can see it from the hotel). The staff are friendly, and the vibe is pretty chilled out. We had a accessible room which is the first of my concerns. Firstly, the alarms are so close to the bed that if you roll over you set them off. There is no shower curtain and the shower drain is in the middle of the room so the floor gets flooded (we resorted to putting towels in the doorway to stop the living area flooding too.), and the floor doesn't dry. Perfect for someone who's bad on their feet. You're so on the 12th floor, so if the fire alarms go off you have 12 floors to negotiate as lifts are a no no in a fire! Whilst we're on the subject of lifts. They clunk and clang like they're on their last legs. The air con is so loud that you can't sleep with it on, the doors can't be closed unless you slam them and if someone flushes a toilet the whole floor hears. Parking is exorbitant (£17 a day), you would think paying £400 for 3 nights would entitled you to free parking. Breakfast is £17.50 a head and not really worth it. The best thing about the whole stay was falling out of the concert and in to the hotel
