Everything about the property was outstanding, from the location to the wonderful staff. The food was excellent and Lynmouth was so pretty.

Nothing. Would have liked to stay longer!

Fantastic overnight stay with amazing views

9.0

Loved the views and comfortable room, staff were all brilliant, wonderful breakfast

Done attention to detail on cleaning, eg mirror in bedroom and shower head, but bed linen lovely and crisp and clean; perhaps just need a housekeeping room inspection for minor details that make a difference eg, nowhere to put a wash bag in bathroom except floor

Worth the Wait: Finally Staying at The Rock Hotel After 34 Years

10.0

I first came to Lynmouth 34 years ago, and I can honestly say it hasn’t really changed. In a world that never seems to stop changing, there is something wonderfully comforting about that. One place that has stayed with me ever since that first visit is The Rock Hotel. Back then it was simply a tea garden serving cream teas in magnificent Victorian gardens overflowing with hydrangeas and colourful shrubs. I remember falling in love with the building long before I ever had the chance to stay there. Unlike many of Lynmouth’s grand Victorian houses, built as retreats for wealthy industrialists escaping the cities, The Rock feels as though it was designed to be a home. It stands alone on its own little piece of land, almost surrounded by the estuary and connected to the village by an iron bridge that feels more like a walkway into another world than simply a way across the water. The location is magical. Directly opposite sits The Rising Sun, one of Lynmouth’s most iconic pubs, while The Rock enjoys the evening sunshine across the estuary. Sitting in the garden with a drink, watching the tide rise and fall, children laughing on the quay and seagulls gliding overhead, is about as perfect as an English summer evening gets. Our room was comfortable, full of character and exactly what I had hoped for after admiring the hotel from afar for over three decades. With only nine rooms, staying here feels personal rather than commercial, and that welcoming atmosphere runs throughout the hotel. If I’m honest, I hadn’t planned to eat in the hotel restaurant. Like many people, I’d assumed it would be fairly standard pub food. Watching people stop to read the menu outside before wandering elsewhere only reinforced my expectations. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The lady who welcomed us at reception also turned out to be the chef, and what came out of her kitchen was exceptional. We shared the salt and pepper squid and the deep-fried Brie to start.

Great location on the coast with a sea view from our room (No.9). Lovely bar, restaurant and garden area which is a sun trap in the day. Room was quite a small twin but very well appointed with a fantastic shower and super comfortable beds. Staff were incred8bly friendly and helpful. Food (omelette breakfast) was good quality. 4 car parking spaces available.
