It’s still a good place to stay
8.0Lots of space, garden areas and a comfortable stay. Staff try hard
− My room needed a little attention like loose fittings on shower, toilet seat loose only one connector properly attached, a little unloved in parts. I understand dynamic pricing but it still annoying to see unsold rooms offered at half the price we paid booked in advance . Asking for 12.5% service charge on crisps & nuts I bought over the bar at already inflated price is TTP.
Disappointing
6.0My room was very spacious and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom too was a good size. The tea/ coffee-making facilities were good with a wide choice of teas especially. Always disappointing that hotels don't include hot chocolate sachets as well! The staff were generally very pleasant and helpful.
− Having stayed at the property a few years ago, I noticed a big difference. It is looking very tired and desperately needs some 'TLC'. If I had paid the full price as booked and confirmed, I would have been very unhappy as the day before my stay, the hotel's direct website was offering my category of room at a price half that which I had booked! I was given a reduction by a very helpful member of staff. The food was very disappointing both for dinner and breakfast. I had a very poor prawn salad for dinner with the prawns having obviously just come out of a packet: the salad was basically just lettuce with some dressing. The full English Breakfast was not good either: tough overcooked bacon and sausage. The best part was the bowl of yogurt with fruit.
I could not recommend The Elephant Hotel in Pangbourne. It feels tired and guests just a number.
4.0The room I was moved to (after being disturbed in the night by a wedding party with huge noise and reverberations through my original single room floor) was pleasant, although I'd say the bathroom was tired. The bed linen was good.
− The single room I originally booked was poky and hot and overlooked the carpark. The milk for my tea curdled and there is no fridge. The noise in general was bad with rush hour and people coming and going, however I accepted it would quieten later. However the very loud disco from the wedding party (I was not part of) when I returned from a gathering in Goring forced me to request a room change at 11pm, packing up my room and being unable to relax and rest as I planned ahead of my wedding event in Silchester the next day. I had to move and I have to say the young staff left to deal with everything were helpful. However the huge noise remained until midnight. I contacted the Manager (off that weekend) and made a complaint and I received a refund on my breakfast (which was tolerable). No apology and no reply. I was also locked out at 12.15am, no information given about having to use the side entrance. The bell at the front door didn't alert anyone. I had to knock continuously and loudly and thought I'd be sleeping rough but after 15 minutes of knocking, someone eventually appeared. No information given about this and another couple reported the same. Completely unsatisfactory attention to detail.
