Okay for some, but just be honest with your own expectations.
6.0I stayed here for three nights in late Jan. My main reason for selecting this hotel was location to an appointment I had in Chaweng. Just needed a no-frills, decent bed, place to sleep. That's just what I got. This place is NOT a resort, but rather a very low-key, bare-bones motel style establishment. So - I got what I needed, but was a bit surprised by what I encountered. There seem to be several people who do use this place for long vacation stays. This is surprising to me as I believe a vacation should include a little bit of luxury, and this place is definitely not defined by any luxury at all. Much of the clientele seems to be 65+ year-old Europeans. This is surprising to me as the place seems much more suited to a very young set with a low price point only needing an inexpensive place to crash after a night of hard partying. The lowdown: very small rooms with a small bathroom/shower, a TV and a small refrigerator. Air conditioning, room safe, and NO phone. It's clear the intention is very little service, and simply a place to crash (which makes my above point of elderly Europeans staying on long vacations all the more demonstrative). Pros: typical Thai hospitality. Everyone was quite friendly. Realities: while this is a "beachfront hotel", there is no beach. The water comes straight up to the concrete barrier which is the edge of the property. There is a small rectangular pool lined with lounge chairs the majority of which are occupied by the aforementioned old people (65+ often a low estimate). Breakfast was a bit dismal. Low quality, minimal selection, and some bakery items only had three or four pieces on display. There was no espresso available and only a large pot of regular coffee. The hot entrees (fried rice, noodles) were mediocre at best. Overall condition of the facility including the grounds and inside the rooms was poor to fair at best. The location is just off of Chaweng Beach road which is the main super busy touristy area on all of Koh Samui. This road has all of the restaurants, bars, massage parlors, weed shops, souvenir shops and sewer smells that you could possibly need or want. So - The place is fine if you need to crash for a night or two. But for an extended stay or "special" occasion.... not so much.

READ BEFORE YOU BOOK!
2.0I have stayed at the Montien in Chaweng several times before, but my most recent booking was such a poor experience that I will never return. I accidentally booked the wrong night on Agoda — the same night I was already staying at another property across the island. As soon as I realized, I immediately called Agoda. Their customer service team tried three times to reach the hotel, left messages, and received no reply. I also used the Agoda app to send a direct email to the property explaining my mistake and requesting a date change. Again, no response. That made four separate attempts to contact Montien — without any acknowledgment. The following day, I stayed nearby and walked to Montien to resolve the issue in person. I explained the multiple attempts made and asked not for a refund, but simply a credit toward another night when they were not sold out. Instead of trying to work with me, the staff claimed they never received any messages. When I showed proof of my email sent via Agoda, they reluctantly checked and realized their contact email on Agoda was outdated — something they had failed to update after changing it. This was the root of the problem: Montien’s negligence in keeping their contact information current. It is the property’s responsibility to inform online booking partners of changes, not Agoda’s. Yet, the staff refused to take accountability. After I reported this experience to Agoda's customer service on the phone, they fully agreed that the Montien Hotel mishandled the situation and compensated me with Agoda Cash equal to my loss. I’ve booked over 300 nights through Agoda, and I’ll continue to use them because they understand customer service. Unfortunately, the Montien Hotel in Chaweng does not. Unfortunately, I am only able to post photos of my discussion. I actually recorded a video on my iPhone and the Thai translation of their discussion with the hotel boss clearly demonstrated that they knew I was a frequent guest of the property. In fact, I had just stayed at the property 3 nights prior to this incident and they all recognize me every time I arrive going back over 3 years. Imagine being treated like this when they know you as a frequent customer. Just an absolute punch in the gut. Final Recommendation: Avoid this property. Mistakes can happen when booking, but what matters is how a hotel responds. Montien failed to take responsibility, refused a reasonable solution, and demonstrated poor customer service. They’ve lost my business permanently, and I hope this review helps others make an informed decision. The attached photo shows our discussion as well as the guests waiting for their room who got to witness this rude and unprofessional conversation in person. The look on their faces said it all, they could not believe how poorly I was treated as they heard the entire conversation.
