We choose The Residence Zanzibar as we had a great stay at The Residence Hotel in Mauritius. But this Hotelreally needs

Location is good but hotel needs to be upgraded and Service is Bad . You have to wait 30 mins to get tea / coffee at breakfast

− Service is not good , food is also okay and Hotel needs to be upgraded . We had booked a seafront villa , the Pool area had Bird shit everywhere , You couldn’t sit outside. We had to Call the cleaning Service a few times . Not worth the Money .

Honeymoon stay good but not 5 stars

We stayed for our honeymoon and wanted somewhere that was not too crowded and The Residence delivers that. The “semi-private” beach means that only hotel guests can enjoy the beach. The infinity pool was a great place to relax and sunbathe, the spa facilities were good, the food was enjoyable (perhaps not 5 star quality, but we could always find something that we enjoyed) and the rooms are a good size with all the amenities one could wish for. The staff are incredible - they always have a smile on their faces and will go out of their way to be as helpful as possible. The private pool by the room is lovely if you want extra privacy and the bicycles are a nice touch for getting around the premises. The hotel staff were also kind enough to arrange luggage pickup from our room as we checked out very early and arranged a takeaway breakfast for us which was very thoughtful.

− Food quality for breakfast and dinner is okay, but can be repetitive. Desserts are very bad - many had a fridge aftertaste and any chocolate desserts weren’t really chocolate but sugar. You’d expect some high quality chocolate in a 5 star hotel in Africa but that wasn’t the case. The only dessert which was good was their ice cream. WiFi was touch and go throughout our 10 day stay, but every time I informed the staff, they did their best to help fix it. The TV didn’t work (only wanted to watch some snippets of the World Cup but this wasn’t possible probably because the TVs channels are dependent on WiFi which wasn’t good. I did again inform the hotel staff and they tried to fix it, but when it didn’t work I just decided not to use the TV (I’m sure if they were informed, they’d have tried again to fix it but it wasn’t important). The tennis courts are very poor - the surface is very damaged and the quality of rackets and tennis balls is very poor (it would be better if the hotel stopped offering tennis until they sort this out because it was very disappointing to an avid tennis player). The power cuts were very frequent and although I know the hotel can’t do much about this, it does take away from its 5 star rating alongside all the other technological issues. I think the hotel capitalised from the fact that it is so remote and there are no shops nearby (apart from a boutique souvenir shop on the premises) and it charges a lot for drinks, snacks and food overall (if you are half board). I’d say the prices were just as or even more expensive than the UK which is quite cheeky. For example, a cocktail might cost 17-20 USD.

This was a truly special stay with a wonderful room, resort, staff and food! Highly recommend especially if wanting to relax.
