Walking distance to town centre
8.0Check in time at this hotel was 2 pm which I knew but there was something I wanted to do in town at just after 2, so wanted to leave my car in the hotel car park and walk back into town. I arrived at 1.30 and there was no one around although there was a sign on the door saying reception was open 8 to 8. I rang the bell a couple of times but no one appeared so I wandered around the back and saw a door open with a number of laundry bags on the floor and a young woman in there. She said she would come through to reception but when I went back to reception it was an older woman who was angry and said I should not have gone through to a ‘private’ area, I guess she meant the area with all the hotel laundry bags. I held back a reply about maybe responding to the call bell and explained that I just wanted to leave my car there. Not sure why she was so cross. Anyway when I got back to the hotel just after 5 she appeared to have calmed down but it wasn’t the most welcoming experience I have had on my long trip around New Zealand. I had not stayed in a Bella Vista Motel before although there are quite a few around New Zealand. My room was quite nice, appeared clean but probably needs an upgrade. The shower was over the bath and the bath had some gaffer tape obviously fixing an issue with it but I used the shower not the bath so this was not a problem although it should be fixed. The water strength was quite good. A bonus that not all NZ Motels have is that the TV had some sky channels on it which was great during the time I spent in the room. I had booked a studio room that came equipped with a microwave, iron, kettle and toaster. It also had a fridge that I thought was working too hard as my milk froze overnight but I eventually realised it was my eyesight and I had turned it up rather than down by mistake! I used the onsite laundry which was clean and working OK, and had a good nights sleep. Apart from the welcome I could not fault this motel.

10.0Warm welcome. The property was nice and warm inside. Although it was a wet day, could walk quite easily to Hokitika town Centre.
