Not a great experience

This hotel is no more than a guest house. The online photos are misleading First the positives. The manager was welcoming . We had coffee and croissants on arrival for the organied group we were with. Each day on our return we had a cake in the room. Unfortunately there were more negatives Our room was No1. It was up a steep staircase along a corridor It was small and dinghy looking out on to walls. The wardrobe was open with shelves and was dropping apart We had one towel each with wasn't changed until we asked. We were even asked if we wanted the room tidying. The meals were adequate. It was help yourself off a heated serving trolley with a choice of three. Not many fresh veg though. The continental breakfast had several choices of breads etc The fruit was tinned peaches pears and mandarin oranges. Juice was orange. They seemed to have some strange clients in the basement who were definitely not conventional paying guests. They sat on the steps smoking. One bloke with a dog another off his head on drugs. Lots of very alternative blokes coming and going into the hotel. They certainly didn't join us for meals I would not recommend this place Even asking for a printed drinks bill seemed difficult. The bar staff didnt know what a sherry was All in all not the best experience.

Not a bit like their website

We had asked for a room with a separate shower and facing the sea. What we had was a room with a shower facing two rendered walls. The room was vary small, gloomy and rather claustrophobic with very little space to move around. The "easy chair" was low and very saggy and difficult to access as it was in a corner behind the dressing table or desk. The shower was ok and we had one towel each, no hand towels were there but we did have a bath mat to step out onto. The vegetarian food was very, very unimaginative served in a dark, thick liquid which could have been thick Bisto gravy. Some of the starters and deserts were good though. The bar, lounge, television room and games room was just one, all encompassing room with a sea view from the bay window, it could accommodate about 20 people in total I think. I found it strange that there were no marked fire exits or directions to the rooms, which were accessed from different stairs. There seemed to me to be little attention to health and safety re trailing leads etc. It was all rather disappointing compared to the website pictures. The location was good.

Warm welcome at the Ellan Vannin Hotel.

I have just come back from a stay at the Ellan Vannin Hotei, in Douglas Isle of Man. On first arrival I thought the hotel a little dated, but as the stay progressed the warmth of the staff shone through. Nothing was too much trouble. it was always clean. The breakfast was brilliant with plenty of hot and cold choice. I believe it is a family run establishment and that is how you felt during the stay a real home from home experience.
