Relaxing beach stay but room for improvement

We have mixed feelings about our stay at Kayaam House near Tangalle. It’s a beautifully designed boutique property in a very peaceful setting, with jungle on one side and the ocean on the other, giving it a real sense of seclusion and tranquillity. The architecture and interiors are elegant and understated, and the pool and gardens are particularly lovely – it’s a great place to slow down and switch off. The beach is also stunning although, with the sea unsuitable for bathing due to the current, it’s there for a stroll rather than a swim. The rooms thoughtfully designed, with an indoor-outdoor feel that suits the setting well. We found our room smaller than we’d enjoyed elsewhere in Sri Lanka which may explain why after we had booked, they had changed the name from Palm View Suite to Palm View Room. Nevertheless, it was perfectly comfortable for a short stay. Service was friendly and well-intentioned, but we did find it a little hit and miss at times. Given that Kayaam House is part of the same wider group as Ceylon Tea Trails – where the service is truly world class – it felt like there was an opportunity to be a bit more polished and consistent here. We appreciate it’s a different, more relaxed concept, but there is still room for improvement. It may be that the number of new trainees is the explanation for this, but with no one visibly in charge and less robust service from the more established members of the team, it’s unfair to blame the new starters. Similarly, while many of the reviews here are very positive about the food, we found it to be more average than expected as well as very expensive, and on a few occasions items were either unavailable from the menu or didn’t match the descriptions. It didn’t detract from the overall stay, but it didn’t quite match the standard we had experienced elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Other future guests may be happy to know that we had dinner one evening at a local restaurant called The Bungalow which was 5 minutes by tuktuk from the hotel and it was infinitely better than anything we had in the hotel restaurant and at a fraction of the cost. Overall, Kayaam House is a peaceful boutique hotel in a beautiful setting. With a little more consistency in service and a stronger food offering, it could easily move from good to excellent.

Beautifully designed hotel with fabulous staff

I thought this hotel was incredible. From the very warm welcome and showing us around until we left. We only had 2 nights here but the hotel is stunning. The design of the place is beautiful, we had a 1st floor Ocean view and lovely balcony with a bath. The swimming pool is gorgeous and lovely sun loungers. We also used the hotel gym, small but had what we needed. Food was really excellent, so much so we ate on site both nights, recommend the lobster linguine & the seafood platter (we shared with some salads).

− All I can think of is that the price of the spa treatments felt high for Sri Lanka. I'd been in several 5 star hotels and had 2 or 3hr treatments for $80-95, yet here a 1hr treatment was in excess of $100. As a result I did not take any treatments, but waited until I got to the next hotel. Wouldn't it be better to charge less and more people take treatments?
