Very basic but reflects the price
5.0Comfy bed good shower
− No cups for tea or coffee in the room numerous emails calls and texts trying to get my room number as there's no reception or staff at property
I will never comeback or recommend, The Golden Lion Hotel in Middlewich.
1.0Nothing, there is nothing to like. My rating is 0 (zero)
− Given room no.6, it did not have running water. Rang the owners they did not respond, left a message to ring back urgently as there is no running water. 15mins later I rang again and there was still no answer. Then I got a call back, they asked me to move to another room. This room (no.5) also did not have running water. Then they asked me to go to room no.4 this room finally had running water. I then got my stuff out of the car, went back in the room. I unpacked my suitcase, got the hangers off and they were filthy. I looked around the room, dust was everywhere. I put my stuff back in the suitcase. As it was about 7:30, I wanted to freshen up but I could not as they do not provide toiletries, which was not made clear during booking. Luckily there was a supermarket nearby so I managed to get the toiletries. The towel provided was torn, the tea provided was just open tea bags in the open no hygiene (dusty room), the one milk (mini pot) provided had expired on 12 Mar 2025. I did not end up staying the full 3 night booked, I left after the 2nd day. I have asked the owner for VAT receipt. I am still waiting, no response from them shows no customer focus.
Red lion/ Middlewich taps ?
7.0Room was clean and comfortable
− No soap in bathroom, no coffee , the cup was a plastic carton from a pg tips take away drink And the hotel had changed its name without Notifying me it is still down a the red lion when it is now the middlewich taps advertising rooms £29.00, I booked at £44.00 Having said this I would book again no problem
The service was totally useless and they are clearly not good enough to be listed on booking.com
1.0− The property was difficult to find this was because it is now called the Taphouse - most bizarre given the different name on Booking.com On entering the room it was clear that the bin had not been emptied and was full of empty beer cans. There was only 1 towel in the room and that was wet and on the floor so presumably used by the last guest in the room. The staff who showed me the room disappeared quickly and were not contactable thereafter. There was a phone line to call for help but all you could do was leave messages. Later on I was looking for the TV remote and could not find it - I left another message on the answerphone and got no replies. I did eventually find the remote when I got into bed and found it with my feet at the foot of the bed. This made me realise that the bed sheets had probably not been changed since the last guest occupied it - why would staff leave a remote under the duvet? The bar downstairs was closed too. I did not bother staying for breakfast which was outside from a caravan. More like a truckers stop!!!
Ultra basic, and complete lack of communication - avoid!
1.0I got to leave
− On my way to the property i got messages to say the room i booked wasn't available, and was downgraded (for the same price). The purpose of booking this place was the location, as close to where i was working the next day, but 5hrs drive from my home. Also it was listed as being attached to a bar/restaurant. The bar is closed. The restaurant is closed. This is not ideal when travelling for so long to get there. It was ultra basic, it reminded me of halls of residence at university. The shower was held together by zip ties????? The door to enter the property was on a spring closer which made it bang shut - something that reverberated through the building when other guests come in late or left early. I have been messaging the property since my stay for an invoice - they have STILL not responded to any messages.
