Our stay at Maringi Sumba was a wonderful way to end our time in Sumba. Its convenient location close to the airport made it an ideal choice, but what really made our stay special was being part of the inspiring work of the Sumba Hospitality Foundation. Knowing that the hotel provides hands-on training for young Sumbanese people pursuing careers in hospitality made the experience even more meaningful. Every student we met was genuinely friendly, polite, eager to learn, and took great pride in looking after the guests. A special thank you to Carlitos and Maria, who welcomed us on arrival and made the check-in process smooth and informative. The restaurant offered plenty of delicious choices, and Omi’s attentive and caring service made every meal enjoyable. I treated myself to a hot stone massage at the spa, which was the perfect way to relax before our journey home. Thank you to Youlan and Tesa for such a memorable and rejuvenating experience. Maringi Sumba is much more than a hotel—it’s a place where your stay directly supports the education and future careers of local young people. We left feeling not only well cared for but also grateful to have experienced such a thoughtful and inspiring project.

Nightmare. Ruined my holiday

− 4 million rupiah for this? I’ve stayed in budget hostels that were cleaner, more comfortable, and more honest about what they offer. The room is tired, the bathroom looks neglected, the flooring feels like it hasn’t seen a proper deep clean in years, and the whole property becomes oddly unsettling after dark. The biggest joke is the “all-inclusive” marketing. It’s not really all-inclusive when guests don’t get to choose their meals, drinks are charged separately, and most of the food is prepared by students doing practical training. At some point I started wondering whether I had booked a hospitality retreat or accidentally enrolled in a hospitality school. Guests are paying premium resort prices, yet the experience feels like being a live training project. The students are trying their best, and this review is not about them. The problem is charging luxury rates while delivering a student-practical experience. The place also has a strange cult-like vibe. Everything revolves around the institution and its philosophy, while guest comfort seems to come second. What makes it worse is that there are far better options nearby. Arya is cheaper, cleaner, more professional, and actually feels like a place built for travelers instead of a campus charging resort prices. This is not luxury. This is not all-inclusive. This is not value for money. It’s a very expensive lesson in managing expectations. Avoid.

Very lovely stay. The staff were exceptionally attentative and helpful. The place may be a bit more expensive than other places on Sumba but consider that it covers all meals. The staff even did our laundry for free!

The property is run by students of the hospitality school - all working hard and keen to make a future in the hospitality industry. They are extremely helpful. Food in the restaurant was delicious!
