The lawsuit threat was hilarious

− I reviewed this apartment honestly. What followed was more memorable than the stay. The stay first, in plain facts. There is a €9-per-day charge for the TV remote — not the TV, the remote. The TV appears in the listing photos; the surcharge appears only after check-in. (For fellow guests: the button on the unit itself controls power, channels and volume. Zero euros.) The kitchen knives could not cut butter. There was no grater. The dining table a bacteria trap. The check-in lady was genuinely kind and the view is lovely. Those are my honest impressions. I said as much in a review. Management's reply, in full: "Your comment accusing us of theft constitutes defamation, which is illegal in France. Please remove it; otherwise, we will unfortunately have to file a complaint with the relevant authorities." I had not used the word "theft." They did. A second email arrived, informing me they would "lodge a complaint" and seek "damages for the loss of turnover suffered," while explaining that I had booked during "an exceptional opening period, which in no way reflects the standard of our establishment under normal circumstances." They added that they had opened for the UCI MTB World Cup and would "inform the UCI" of the negative press. A third email cited Article 29 of the Law of 1881, warned of a possible "€12,000" fine, invoked the Digital Services Act, and reserved the right to pursue "civil proceedings for damages and, where appropriate, criminal proceedings." It closed by assuring me they "remain willing to resolve this matter amicably." So, to summarise the guest experience: a hidden charge to operate the television, and three emails threatening litigation for mentioning it. I leave the reader to weigh the kindness of the check-in and the quality of the view against a management that responds to honest feedback with the Freedom of the Press Act of 1881.
