There are nicer places to stay not too far away.

5.0

The staff were very friendly.

The rooms were really cramped and had windows that hardly opened on a day that was in the mid-high 30s. They did not provide a fan or any other cooling apparatus, and so we were extremely hot all night - not much sleep was had. The garden was between a busy road, a car park and a busy trainline, noisy and not scenic. I wouldn't stay again, it's no disrespect to the staff who are working hard and are very friendly, but we paid considerably less earlier in the week to stay in rooms where fans and coolers had been thoughtfully provided, in much more beautiful surroundings. If you are walking the Vanguard way as we were, it's worth walking the extra couple of miles to Alfriston.

We had a meal on arrival which was really nice. Breakfast was delicious it was just what we needed to start our day.

Not having a bottle of water in the room with the tea and coffee facilities

Go for the history and the food, stay for the smiles...!

9.0

The welcome was genuine, all the staff were super friendly, nothing being too much trouble (the room was meant to be ‘twinned’ and we felt awful taking the boys away from watching the England match, but still all smiles). Lovely al fresco areas for every taste and climate and the steak we ordered (it was Wednesday’s ‘deal’), was superb. Continental breakfast with the tastiest of real ham, pastries fresh out of the oven and as much ‘Nespresso’ as we could manage, set us up for the day.

The twin beds were rather narrow, so if you’re of large stature, best have a double to your self! Take your ear plugs as the train rumbles past right next door (somehow I missed this when looking at the location map!). The ‘breakfast room’ was still a bit of a shambles, but hey, storage is always an issue in old pubs, and the smiles and service of the staff just made it feel more like a home

An overpriced Inn with adequate rooms but shabby communal facilities & appalling breakfast.

3.0

The bedroom & bathroom were refurbished 2-3 years ago & were up to a good standard, if a little small. The decor was pleasant & modern compared to the rest of the pub. There was plentiful coffee in the room but no milk provided. Toiletries were good.

There were many things missing from the room: no storage, very little hanging space, no tv, no fridge, no safe, no shaving socket or lights around the mirror in the bathroom, no tissues, no fan (it was very hot). This was meant to be a deluxe room & was highly overpriced at £120+ per night. Staff were pleasant but very young & no one knew how to check us in on arrival. There was no manager (or indeed anyone) around & we were given the manager’s number who was in Greece on holiday. We paid for Continental breakfast but this was laughable. The first morning there was no one present: no juice, milk was apparently in the fridge but no one told us, no food of any description (apart a few canisters of half-full cereals), no water to drin, no instructions how to use the few coffee capsules provided, no plates, no tea. The chef appeared after my partner rang the manager in Greece. He heated up 2 croissants & brought us a jug of milk. The second day, we were left croissants & pain au chocolate from the night before (all stale) & the milk was off - still nothing else provided & no one was around. It was absolutely appalling & not the way to run an Inn. We paid virtually London prices for very poor facilities - ok rooms but the remainder of the property was very shabby & breakfast was non-existent.
