The cottage is very authentic and peaceful. The garden is beautiful and full of edible fruits and herbs. The view from the far end of the garden is something straight out of a fairytale : the view is a sight to behold and never forget. Be very careful if you have small children (which I don't) the garden has a gate to the far end so the way to the cliff is not open but make sure to keep in mind that beyond the gate there is +- 20 meter of beautiful garden but then comes a very deep cliff. Make sure to keep watch and be careful there because the cliff is 10 meter + deep and ends with sharp rocks. This offcourse is not criticism, the cliff is absolutely beautiful, I just want to make sure that visitors keep this in mind. The Azores are extremely beautiful and have a very wide variety of natural wonders to behold but do not understimate the cliffs and the ocean. What did I enjoy the most? That is a difficult question because there is so much to choose from. But to name a few : the couple that manages the cottage is extremely friendly and also very forgiving. I made a few dumb mistakes like losing the key on the first day, leaving the cottage an hour late on departure, usually both of these mistakes would have cost me some problems and money but the key situation was solved within 1 hour : The host came to bring a new key, was very friendly and just laughed about the fact I was able to lose a key so fast and then spent some time telling me interesting facts about the island and the local culture and recommended some nice places to visit, showed me how to recognise a ripe fig from the tree and I ate them every day from that point on and he did not charge any money for the lost key and even refused it when I offered it. This by the way is a common thing on the island which surprised me pleasantly : the people aren't moneygrabbing greedy money wolves, on the contrary : they are very modest and have great hospitality.

Perfect sea front location, lovely private garden with some herbs making home cooking so much more enjoyable and a lovely authentic Azorean cottage

− Bed linen doesn’t fit the bed properly. Having to remove our own trash at the end of our stay did not sit well with us. Yes there were a few of the bugs that are mentioned however they come in at night under the door, in such a lush and humid island it’s to be expected.

Cottage full of cockroaches. We cannot recommend staying in this house.

Nothing. We had a terrible experience.

− We enjoyed a lot the island of Sao Miguel, but our stay at Coastal Trail Cottage was kind of a nightmare due to our daily encounters with several cockroaches (in the floor, in the kitchen sink, even one falling from the ceiling) -most of them half dead, but still a disgusting experience for our family with two children. We spent one week cleaning roaches inside the house. The owner said she was sorry and that the exterminator had sprayed twice in the previous two weeks, but didn't offer another remedy than keeping the doors closed in the eventing and sweeping outside so that the salamanders can take them. We told her that we believe the roaches come from the drains and that there is a sewer problem in the house: there was also some bad smell inside the house occasionally. Two days after alerting her, she came to the house and sprayed extra outside the windows edges and doors, but this didn't solve the problem. We think the owner should have at least told us beforehand that there was this serious problem in the house. We told her that she should have closed the house until the problem is solved, but she took it badly. The day we were leaving she said that she was very sorry for our experience and that they were looking for stronger pesticides, but she showed no empathy -and she recommended that we book a hotel next time we come to Sao Miguel!
