The characterful appeal of Old Windmill is indisputable, but so, too, are its shortcomings.

I self catered at this property and was happy to do so, shopping locally for what I fancied. The Old Mill has character that appealed to me and it was near the centre of Kirkbymoorside.

I spent much time worrying about how I was going to reverse my car off the premises when departure time came. I usually reverse my car into spaces and am never concerned about doing so, but the narrowness of the drive at the property was extreme indeed and I did not take my car out until I had to when I left. I only learned about the unusual restrictions when booking was confirmed and cancellation was/is not an option. I was happy to be in Kirkbymoorside for three nights and two days and I did my exploring of the wider area after I'd left The Old Windmill. The high shower head was very off-putting, as I am short, also many of the windows would not open. One of the two windows in the main bedroom was open when I arrived, but I closed it overnight and it would not budge in the morning. I have an identical TV to the one in the living room, but I could not discover how to use the one at The Old Windmill. I had taken a book I wanted to read with me, but I missed watching the news and I had not taken a small radio as I usually do when I go away, also, not using my car, I did not have the use its radio until I moved on.

Good views from the windows and easy access to N Yorks sites

Unusual building. Pleasant open scenery on south side. Good views. Good shower. Location good for getting to Helmsley, NY Moors, Pickering etc. Also easy walk to shops and pubs in Kirkby

Badly fitting cupboard door in kitchen. No decent knife to cut vegetables or meat. Some crockery and some cutlery was not clean. There was a used sheet left in the lounge on arrival. Only 2 toilet rolls provided (for 3 people, could have been 4) so had to buy more towards end of week. Very old rattley door handles which made a lot of noise in the middle of the night if anyone went down to the toilet. Car access was much more difficult than expected. The “arch” is more like a tunnel. Although the description said “very narrow” it would have been helpful to provide dimensions. We don’t have a large car but even with wing mirrors turned in there was only 2 inches each side as we passed through and without them, dark patches in the tunnel made it difficult to see the rear-view camera picture. Parked on the high Street after arrival day.

Lovely quirky and homely property

10.0

Lovely quirky, homely setting. Really nicely decorated. Fun board games and an amazing library. Great setting in the middle of a lovely village, with pubs, shops, eateries and grocery stores.

Heating wasn’t on when we arrived (but it did warm up very quickly)

Cosy and warm

10.0

Perfect location for exploring. We had our 4 year old and 1 year old with us. There was plenty of room and they both loved going around all the rooms. Beds were very comfortable, sheets were cosy (I was very impressed!). Heating was excellent. Everything was immaculately clean. Did notice a lot of blue bottle flies on the top floor but I suppose not much can be done about that. They were only on the top floor, didn’t affect any other floor. Lovely hamper from the hosts too. Living area was comfortable, again cosy. We felt safe during our stay. Hosts were lovely and friendly, good communication throughout. I had no signal, but internet was fast and reliable. I would highly recommend.

Honestly I don’t think any changes need to be made, it was a wonderful stay
