I had a blast staying at Maracas Gardens during Carnival, and if you’re looking for a cozy retreat just outside Port of Spain (about 30 to 45 minutes from the city center), this is your perfect haven. Arlene, the owner, is a total gem—so kind, so welcoming, and absolutely determined to make sure you feel at home. Her family is equally as warm. Whether you’re a Carnival goer or just seeking a peaceful Trinidad escape, this place is perfect—especially with its own private pool. When I ran into costume mishaps or transportation hiccups, Arlene was right there helping me troubleshoot — even when it wasn’t her responsibility. Arlene also by created special breakfast options, tailored to my dietary preferences. If you want a blend of Carnival magic, serene vibes, and a family that feels like friends, book Maracas Gardens. We will always stay in touch with Arlene and her family—they have truly become like lifelong friends to us.

The host, Arlene was very friendly and accommodating. The breakfasts were HUGE and diverse. The accommodation itself is very spacious and the pool is lovely as is the surrounding area. I had everything I needed while staying there and really appreciated the basket of snacks and the provision of milk for making tea. It's the little things! Arlene was also so kind to drop me off to the hummingbird centre nearby when I was struggling to find a ride which I really appreciate! Which is another tip, the only thing close by is the Yerette hummingbird centre where you can see many species of hummingbirds up close and personal.

− The only thing to factor into the stay is that having a car or transport will be helpful if staying in this location. The location is not near the centre (or near restaurants etc.) so it's a 20-30 minute ride to the main tourist spots which is fine if you have transport and usually it's also possible to get a cab through the app to move around but since it's a bit out of the way, it could be a little more complicated without transport.
