Great location for exploring Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc.
9.0The Pickled Onion, located in Santa Elena between Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc, makes a great base for exploring the area. I stayed here on my first trip in December 2019 and again in June 2026. The small complex of thatched-roof bungalows is set in a jungle garden with a swimming pool and an open-air restaurant. The property changed hands in 2026 and is now run by Amy Jo, an English-speaking expat. While comfortable, the establishment is somewhat rustic and still a work in progress. We stayed in one of the king-bed bungalows, furnished with a comfortable king bed draped with mosquito netting, one bedside table, a luggage rack, a storage area with shelves, and a small sitting area with a couch, chair, and table. The room also has a small loft area at one end. The bathroom is spacious, with counter space around the sink and a shelf underneath for personal items. The shower is large, with good hot water but weak water pressure. The Wi-Fi connection was OK, and there were a few outlets for charging electronics. The room also has a coffee maker and refrigerator but no safe. The room has air conditioning, but it is not adequate to cool the room in a reasonable amount of time during June. It takes several hours before the room is comfortable enough to sleep in. At other times of the year I'm sure it is fine. There is also a ceiling fan. The room was clean, but the thatched roof isn't completely sealed, so bugs do get in. I didn't find it much of a problem, but if you can't tolerate bugs in your room, this place may be a little too rustic for you. The small pool was clean and wonderful after a hot day exploring the ruins. The onsite restaurant is open-air and not air-conditioned. In December this wasn't an issue, but in June it was still too warm even with the fans. There were also mosquitoes in the dining area. They were better the second evening, and Amy Jo has plans to have the property fumigated.
