The food tastes good but the variety is lousy
6.0The food at the restaurant tastes good but the variety is lousy...pretty much burgers and beer, I expected a little more. Need more than a $50 steak, trout, and chicken pasta...none of these pair good with the sides...
Great staff
8.0We went for a quick getaway after Christmas this past weekend. We've stayed here before and enjoyed it. The staff are very nice and the breakfast is one of the best breakfasts you'll ever get at a hotel. The little lady that handles breakfast does a fantastic job. The rooms are fine, and the location is perfect. I will say this however about our recent stay.. When we were there previously we stayed in the Fortune House and loved it. I booked this trip and specifically chose our room in the Fortune House because we didn't want to be in the hotel part. We have a 100+ year old farm house, so staying in the Fortune House has that 'home' feel for us. We love staying in there. When we arrived to check-in, the gentlemen said he'd take us and show us our room. He proceeded to the elevator and I told him I had booked the Fortune House across the street and that's where we wanted. He told us "we had been upgraded" to a room there in the hotel. While to the Inn this may be an upgrade, to us this was a huge downgrade. We were VERY disappointed in this. They did not tell us this before-hand, there was no compensation for moving us or anything. Just a simple "it's an upgrade". If I wanted to stay in a basic hotel room, I would have picked the Hampton Inn in Abingdon. I do feel like if you're going to move someone from the room that they originally booked, you should at least tell them ahead of time to see if that's something they actually want. In this case, we were very disappointed with the 'upgrade'. When we return to Damascus, I will be hesitant to book the Damascus Old Mill Inn out of fear they will change out room without notice and give us something we don't want, because they feel it's an "upgrade".
Home Away from Home
10.0For our anniversary we stayed in one of the Fortune House rooms. It's part of the Damascus Old Mill Inn. We loved the pine floors and old mahogany furniture and my husband said it was more like visiting friends or family than staying at a hotel. It reminded me of the nice bed and breakfasts in many parts of Europe. The staff was exceptional. We ate lunch at the restaurant where we had a view of the water falling over the dam (the same water that tried to wash away Damascus during Helene), the ducks and geese taking off and touching down on parts of the water, and the turning autumn leaves. The food was fantastic at each meal. The room space was spotless with wonderful bed linens and towels, and because I'm allergic to synthetic fragrances, it was a godsend that this place launders and cleans with fragrance-free products. There's so much craftsmanship in the whole place and it was a real honor to stay here! We will return!
Great staff and food!
10.0My wife and I have a great experience. The staff and food was amazing. This is our third but trip to the inn and it never disappoints. This is a must visit if you’re in Damascus.
Couples trip
10.0We stayed a few nights for our anniversary. It was an amazing place to stay. Everyone was so nice to us from checking in to our breakfast with homemade blueberry muffins. Our room was clean and the bed was so comfortable. There isn’t a lot to do in town but a nice little town to visit if you’re planning on going to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail.
Friendliest staff!
10.0We called to let them know we'd be arriving after 9:00 p.m., which they said was fine, but the kitchen stopped taking orders at 9:00. The front desk offered to take our order and put it in for us. The timing was perfect, and we had hot, fresh food shortly after we arrived. The breakfast buffet was very good, with the blueberry muffins the hit of the party. We had a little dog that they were very kind to.
