The place is great (Varenna), If you want to travel by train (to Milano) or by ferry (to other cities by lake) it is perfect. The view from the apartment is astonishing.

− Unfortunately, we were missing basic things which you normally expect - toilet paper, liquid soup, dishwasher tablets etc.

Great view from the balcony to lake Como. Swimming pool.

− Worst hosting that we ever had. Owner is away and apartment is hosted by hosting company. No one met us and no instructions for check in were provided by hosting company despite we came in check in time. Only after call owner sent instructions for check in. Keys from apartment were missing, hosting company told to look for them on the sofa, under the sofa, under the carpet and so on, no keys found. Three days she promised to come and bring the keys, but never came (we were using door code to enter apartment). No parking garage showed in the photos, just parking area outside. Freezer door of the fridge is broken, we found it in the kitchen cabinet. Bowls and plates dirty. Mold and rust in the shower. No soap, shower gel, dishwasher tabs, just two small bottles of shampoo for three people, for five days. No capsules for coffee machine, even not possible to buy them in Varenna. Apartment looks better in the photos than it is.

The experience could be improved with a few simple measures and more helpful hosts.

Excellent view from balcony over Lake Como and Varenna. Nice swimming pool. Plenty of parking. A lovely area - the walk in to Varenna is steep, but we were aware of that.

− The apartment had not been cleaned when we arrived and we were not told it wouldn't be ready, despite being asked our arrival time 2 days before and on the day. We arrived at 5pm, so after the permitted time. There was no apology or offer of anything to compensate for this until we asked. We were offered a very small amount of compensation, which has not yet been received. We were not provided with access details until we called on arrival and were then told the apartment was not ready. The freezer compartment in the fridge was broken, so food went to waste and the ice build up then melted on to our food in the fridge. The owners said there was nothing that could be done. There is no shade on the balcony or at the pool and therefore it is difficult to be outside for long. There was a retractable canopy over the balcony, but it did not work. There were no items left to make arrival easier - for example dishwasher tablets or washing up liquid, clothes or tea towels. The apartment is quite basic and looks better in the photos than it is. It is over priced for what it is.
