Check-in instructions were very clear, although we had to chase the host for them prior to our arrival. Parking was on-site and very convenient. Easy walking distance into the centre of Colchester. Bedroom was comfortable. Wi-fi was good.

− The property is basic with a capital B. The laminated floor in the kitchen/lounge/dining area is badly worn and has become unstuck (see photo). Our host, although a pleasant enough lady, showed us that the floorboards could simply be kicked back into place. Obviously, when walked upon, they soon moved again which to us, seemed hazardous. We also mentioned to her that the oven door does not close meaning that heat simply escapes if/when used. She recommended that we cook food at a higher temperature to get around this problem! We therefore chose to eat out during our stay rather than use the sub-standard kitchen facilities. We mentioned to her that the shower runs water constantly and cannot be fully turned off. Our host suggested that we lay the shower head on the base of the tray so that it didn’t make too much noise (the bathroom is en-suite). She said that it probably needs a new washer. Cleanliness was also below par with cobwebs that had clearly not been touched for quite some time. The small, old television offers only intermittent reception. The picture and sound cut out continuously. All in all, we felt that little or no effort has been made to provide a comfortable or welcoming environment for paying guests and are surprised that the property continues to be let in its current state.

The apartment was clean and tidy upon arrival.

− The apartment is a bit far from the center of Colchester (15 minutes on foot and with a steep hill). In addition, it is very close to the train tracks and there is constant noise (even at night). The mattresses on both the main bed and the extra bed are very uncomfortable. I could barely sleep during my stay. I have to return to Colchester for work, but I will look for another apartment or hotel."
