For railway buffs like us it was a joy.

The quiet peaceful location. Even the guard geese and visits from the owners dog helped make our stay extra memorable. The evening walk along the old trackbed to the White Lion is also highly recommended.

Poor value. High rate unjustified. Amenities, provisions & guest comforts low quality or lacking

4.0

Charming historic building which has been thoughtfully decorated. The host is very friendly, and shared the history of the property and offered helpful local recommendations. There is a log burner in the living room and a generous supply of firewood was provided. (Although we couldn’t figure out how to avoid smoke going into the living room when we used it - perhaps the host could leave instructions for guests.) We enjoyed seeing the chickens, ducks and geese roam the garden. Guest books are provided in the living room with more helpful recommendations and further history of the property. Despite being close to the host's home (the Signal Box is in the garden of their home), we were given privacy and space to enjoy our stay. The back garden gate opens onto walking and bridle paths. The local area is beautiful, and the local pubs in walking distance serve good quality food. It is easy to drive to other historic sites, museums, activities and pubs in the area.

The bedroom and bathroom are partly below ground level and experiencing some water ingress with patches of penetrating damp and mould. The amenities provided were very basic e.g. two tea bags, two toilet rolls, one hand soap that was almost empty, and other simple items not provided at all (our stay was 6 nights). Items such as bathroom products, hand soap, tea, coffee, cooking oil, dish scrubbing brush and gloves (there is no dishwasher), bin bags and cleaning products should be included and were not. For the price we paid, the amenities, provisions and quality of guest comforts should have been much better. The pillows were small and flat, and the duvet is synthetic and not breathable. The kitchen would benefit from some simple equipment upgrades, for example the frying pans are heavily worn out (not at all non-stick), only two bowls are provided. The rate we paid for our six-night stay was very bad value for money versus other options in the area and even compared to London. The property had good reviews so we trusted the pricing, but we realised later that the nightly rate had been significantly inflated over the dates of our stay and the rate was not justified at all. We significantly overpaid versus other options that also had character and charm, and were disappointed. If the pricing were more reflective of the current offering, we wouldn’t have been disappointed, but at the rate we paid for our stay, it was misaligned. We encourage the host to offer better rates for longer stays and/or not charge such a high nightly rate, and enhance amenities and provisions for a more comfortable guest experience.

A very unusual place to stay.

The unusual nature of the signal box. It was very interesting as was the history of the old station. The log burner was brilliant and the good supply of logs and kindling to use on it was brilliant. It was very well equipped and the bed was very comfortable. We cooked a complete Christmas dinner while we were there. There were several walks from the garden gate. There were also a good selection of pubs nearby to have a drink and meals. We visited the White Lion on Christmas eve and had a delicious meal there. It was also near to Lee on Solent . This is an interesting place to visit. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

There were several steps and walk from the car to the Signal box but that would only only be a problem if you had mobility issues.

Lovely.

The setting was beautiful. The hosts were very nice. The accommodation was very unusual..in a good way.

A dishwasher would have been good and more storage space for food. The shower could do with an update.
