Awful, there’s far better options

− On arrival (through difficult communication due to language barriers) we were told our rooms had been filled, despite having the confirmation on booking.com, after several back and fourths we were told we could try the hotel up the road, despite having already paid and having the confirmation. After 30 minutes of this they eventually gave us the keys to our rooms. The rooms were below standard, the bathroom smelt badly of drains and sewage. There was also a large window above the door into the communal hallway which had the lights on throughout the night so the room was very bright. On top of all this we returned to the property at about 1am one morning and all gates had been locked and we couldn’t get in, with no prior notice that they would be locked at any point. After 30 minutes of trying to contact the hotel and no answer we eventually managed to get in after speaking to a hotel receptionist down the road who somehow managed to contact and wake up one of the residents of the property. Bad experience overall I wouldn’t recommend.

The location is great to discover Malang. A ton of parking space

− Please note the accommodation does not provide any toilet paper for the stay. We had to buy our own which we haven’t encountered in Indonesia yet. Also the accommodation is next to a busy street and there is heavy traffic all day and night. Ear plugs are a must. Also across the street is a school and on week days they sing from 07:00-08:00 through a speaker which is very loud as well.

Compared to the average hotel in Indonesia where you can stay for the same price, Shofa boarding house is above average in terms of room quality and cleaniness.

− The service is non-existent and the boy that received me was not professional at all. The hotel does not reply to phone calls nor whatsapp messages (it was important for me to speak with them as I would arrive late at night by bus). Upon arrival I was not able to pay by card as their pos was apparently not working and the boy at the reception somehow insinuated that I didn't want to pay, while I was telling him that on my booking was written that the structure could take the money from booking directly. I spent one hour waiting for him to make attempts - at some point he was watching a video on YouTube on how to use a pos! After this, every question about services/public transport that I would ask him, would receive the answer 'it is not possible' or 'i don't know'. Very unpleasant experience.
