Service Misses the Mark

I booked a two-night solo retreat at Juniper Preserve to celebrate my birthday, searching hotels across Oregon specifically for outdoor pools. I was so excited for this trip when I found Juniper Preserve. I'm pregnant and this felt like it might be my last solo retreat before motherhood, and I couldn't wait to spend a few days on my own terms just reading, napping, and floating in the pool. Shortly after check-in, however, I learned the AQI was in the unhealthy range. Combined with being pregnant and having asthma, it wasn't safe for me to spend real time outside by the pools which was the entire reason I'd chosen this hotel. When I asked about adjusting my stay, I was told the 48-hour cancellation policy would still apply, no exceptions. That evening I emailed guest services, explained that I was pregnant and asthmatic, and asked for some gesture of resolution such as a spa or dining credit, or credit toward a future stay, given that the entire purpose of my visit was gone. I wasn't asking to leave any more as that option had already been written off, but rather was asking them to help make the stay I'd already paid for and planned around feel worth being there for. It then took 15 hours and a second trip to the front desk before I heard back from their team. When the front desk attendant finally called, at 12:20 PM the next day, they told me I could cancel the following night (Wednesday) without penalty — which made no sense, since I only had one night left (Tuesday). When I pointed that out, they said I could leave that day instead, penalty-free. At no point did a manager speak with me directly. Everything was relayed secondhand through the front desk, including a "resolution" I never asked for. Being told I could simply leave was no longer a solution to what I'd raised, and it just confirmed to me that no one had actually listened to what I said, or cared enough to try to resolve this. I didn't receive any kind of apology or even a feeling of being understood by the staff for why the trip mattered—just a painfully slow response that solidified that my satisfaction wasn't a priority for them, followed by a hasty, dismissive offer to send me on my way, which felt like an insult. I've stayed at luxury hotels around the world, and what sets them apart isn't just the amenities or views—it's the trust that the staff will always make you feel taken care of when something goes wrong, or better yet punctuate celebratory trips with moments of surprise and delight. But here at Juniper Preserve, I am leaving feeling like an inconvenience instead of a guest who matters on a trip I'd been looking forward to for weeks. I won't be returning, and I don't see myself recommending it to the people I care about. It's such a fumble from a customer service standpoint to ruin what could be a years-long relationship by not adequately addressing a trip of importance, and missing the mark with "service." Unfortunately, I'll be returning home with bad news for my husband and family as I don't foresee us booking a return trip together after all, and I would caution others from booking special trips here.
