6.0Executive Inn – Wichita Falls, TX Stayed July 7–8 | Overall Rating: 2.5/5 Stars (Could Easily Be Higher) I stayed at the Executive Inn while helping a friend relocate nearly 1,000 miles across the country. After driving a loaded moving truck for 10–11 hours through Texas in July (which, for those unfamiliar, feels like driving through the inside of an air fryer), my wonderful wife thoughtfully upgraded my reservation to a Jacuzzi room. Her reasoning was simple: "You've earned a hot soak." She was absolutely right. Unfortunately, the room had other ideas. Check-In: Excellent Let's start with the positives because there were several. The young lady working the front desk when I checked in on the afternoon of July 7 was outstanding. She greeted me immediately, was friendly, professional, engaging, and made check-in quick and painless. She deserves recognition because she handled everything that followed with patience and genuine kindness. I was assigned Room 214—the Jacuzzi room my wife had specifically reserved and paid for. Room 214: The Sauna Experience (No Extra Charge) The moment I walked into the room, something seemed...off. It was the air conditioning. While the thermostat proudly displayed 71°, the room actually felt somewhere between 85° and "Who left the oven door open?" This is Wichita Falls, TX in July with outside temperatures ~100°. A functioning AC isn't a luxury, it's part of the survival kit. The AC made all the proper AC noises. But the air coming out wasn't cold enough to convince anyone it was actually participating in the cooling process. I lowered the thermostat to 68°, unloaded my gear from the truck, waited about twenty minutes, and...nothing. The room hadn't cooled even a little. Back at the front desk, the clerk suggested giving it another hour, which seemed reasonable and I appreciated that she didn't immediately dismiss the concern. So, I headed out to find dinner. Dining Options If you're staying here, know that your nearby dining choices are...focused. There’s a Denny’s. Google Maps suggested several other restaurants within walking distance (yes, in the heat, and the fading hope of a jacuzzi soak). But those places were shuttered. I figured, no problem, I'll Grubhub it later and headed back to the hotel, where… the room AC remained committed to its new career as a greenhouse. The Upgrade My wife called the hotel, and the front desk kindly moved me to Room 103. I asked if I could check the room first before moving my stuff and the moment I opened the door… cold air. Actual, honest-to-goodness, air-conditioned air. The thermostat read 72°, and I believed it. I happily turned it down to 68°. While some people consider 72° room temperature, I’m more like "Arctic research station" (my wife will attest). I moved my things, and settled in. Renovated Rooms: Big Improvement Room 103 appears to be one of the newly renovated rooms, and it was honestly very nice: modern wood-look flooring; fresh, clean smell; updated furnishings; comfortable layout; nice amenities, excellent air conditioning. It was like a completely different hotel. By comparison, Room 214 showed its age. It had a musty smell, worn carpeting that definitely didn't encourage walking barefoot, and a mattress that looked like it had faithfully supported travelers since at least the Carter administration. If the renovated rooms represent where the hotel is headed, management is moving in the right direction. Noise Concerns That Never Happened Room 103 sits directly across from the lobby and only a few doors from the pool. Initially I thought, "Well...I'm never sleeping." I was pleasantly surprised. The room was remarkably quiet all night. No loud conversations, no slamming doors, no late-night pool parties. I slept very well. Credit where credit is due. Pool & Hot Tub I didn't use the pool because the chlorine smell was extremely strong, and strong chlorine can have a detrimental effect on my skin. Ironically, that's exactly why my wife had splurged on the in-room Jacuzzi. The pool and hot tub also have fairly restrictive hours (2PM–9PM), which seemed unusual and unnecessarily limited. A Couple Minor Issues The television required a little detective work because the printed channel guide didn't match what the TV actually displayed. Eventually I figured it out. The in-room coffee maker, however, was another story. The reusable coffee basket still contained the dried up and gummy used coffee filter from the previous guest. That's one of those discoveries that instantly changes your morning plans. I decided the safest caffeine source was the gas station on the corner. Breakfast: Calling It "Continental" Doesn't Make It Continental When checking in I noticed several signs emphasizing that breakfast is a CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST ONLY (yes, with plenty of bold letters). That's perfectly fine. I wasn't expecting an omelet station or a chef making Eggs Benedict are a carving board. I was expecting an real “continental breakfast.” But here's what was actually available: • One waffle maker with only the original batter type (there are several flavors available). • Five generic-named cold cereals (not even the name brands?). • White bread for toast (no wheat or muffins or…) • Jelly packets (grape and strawberry only,) • Coffee (it was labelled coffee, anyway) That's essentially it. No boiled eggs. No scrambled eggs. No sausage. No bacon. No yogurt. No cottage cheese. No fresh fruit. No bananas. No apples. No oranges. No muffins. No bagels. No pastries. No cream cheese. No peanut butter. No juice. No butter, just a communal tub of margarine that had clearly lived a full and interesting life. For comparison, most continental breakfasts I've seen include at least a few protein options such as hard-boiled eggs, yogurt cups, cheese sticks, breakfast sandwiches, or even simple sausage links. Nobody expects a full buffet, but a little protein goes a long way, especially for travelers heading back onto the road. At the very least they should add some Sam’s Club pastries and those little chocolate donuts (breakfast of champions). The coffee deserves its own paragraph. It wasn't coffee. It was faintly tinted, coffee-inspired hot water. After one sip, I tossed it and decided to wait until filling up the truck at the nearby gas station. BTW- the gas station on the corner is great and where I found genuinely excellent coffee (I also could have found dinner the night before) served by friendly employees. Honestly, that cup probably saved the next several hundred miles of my drive. One amusing mystery remains: the breakfast room has a microwave. Yet, there is absolutely nothing offered at breakfast that requires a microwave. Perhaps it's there so guests can heat up the breakfast they bought from the gas station on the corner? Customer Service The morning desk clerk was polite enough. When I asked if more breakfast items were coming, he said, "Nope, that’s it." When I asked if there were any protein options. He stated an immediate, practiced and emphatic "NO!". His response and those “continental breakfast only” signs at check-in make it obvious that I was far from the first guest to ask about this. Clearly, management has heard this feedback before and chose to ignore it. Final Thoughts The Executive Inn feels like two different hotels living under one roof. The renovated rooms are genuinely clean, modern, comfortable, and quiet. Well done. The older rooms, however, are overdue for retirement and probably shouldn’t be booked until updated. The staff - especially the young lady working the evening shift on July 7 - were excellent. If management can finish the renovations, ensure every room has a functioning air conditioner, improve housekeeping on items like coffee makers, and upgrade breakfast to an actual continental breakfast (including even a handful of simple protein choices), this hotel could easily become a four-star value for travelers. Would I stay again? Maybe, but only in one of the renovated rooms and I'd plan on needing a separate stop in the morning breakfast (there’s always Denny’s) and coffee at the gas station. On the other hand, other hotels in the area have probably already figured these things out.
Could not sleep due to uncleanliness
3.0Nothing
− Towels were not clean, fire alarm was torn off, looks like the room was never cleaned. Told the front desk about the towel situations (showed pictures) and she looked like she was about to laugh.
