Excellent cabin, reasonable food, good value

Located 15 minutes from the town of Menongue, Rio Cuebe Lodge was a pleasant surprise. Generally friendly staff, with some English, we were driven from reception in a golf buggy to our cabin, which was very spacious and beautifully furnished with good a/c. The higher numbered cabins - ours was in the 20s - are newer and bigger but further (5-10 minutes’ walk) from the restaurant and pool. The roofing is corrugated metal covered with palm fronds, so watertight and relatively insect-free but still quite noisy when it rained. We were glad our cabin was set back from the river, which rose 15 ft in the night owing to a torrential downpour (pics). The restaurant was fine rather than spectacular - decent steak and best chips yet in Angola for lunch, a bit lacking at breakfast time but they do a mean fried egg. Nice looking pool but we didn’t go in. We didn’t have an evening meal. Best of all was the price, 25,000 Kwanzas (c.£85) b&b a night for a couple sharing, which was a rainy season special methinks. One word of caution: there are loads of electric cables lying around including across roads and along pathways, just waiting for an accident to happen.
