Capella was probably the most unique hotel we stayed at during our Shanghai trip. Staying in a restored Shikumen villa feels completely different from staying in a conventional luxury hotel. Even before we arrived, the hotel contacted us to ask if we had any special requests. After learning that my wife was pregnant and that we were celebrating her birthday, they prepared a pregnancy pillow in the room and decorated the villa before we checked in. We did have a small issue with the toilet on the first evening, but it was fixed very quickly and the staff handled it professionally. One of our favourite parts of the stay was the complimentary cultural activities. We made traditional hair accessories, carved jade, printed our own tote bags and dressed in traditional clothing for photographs. The staff at Auriga Spa were especially friendly during the perfume sachet workshop and while helping us choose the outfits. Throughout the stay, the team always seemed to notice the little things, whether it was offering umbrellas when it rained or simply greeting us warmly whenever we returned to the hotel. Capella isn't just a beautiful hotel. It's one of those places where the staff make you feel genuinely welcome, and that's what we'll remember most. We'd happily stay here again on our next visit to Shanghai.

A beautiful and atmospheric villa stay

We stayed at this hotel for just one night, mostly for the experience, as we spent most of our Shanghai trip in other hotels. It is a very beautiful place and definitely worth trying. The villas are very cozy, quiet, and aesthetically pleasing. We had a wonderful sleep and a very restful stay. Breakfast is à la carte, and the choice is not very large, but overall we enjoyed our stay. For us, the main highlight was the villa itself. One day was enough to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere and enjoy the experience.

Es un sitio muy especial, muy diferente a cualquier hotel. Las habitaciones tienen acceso directo desde la calle y varios pisos, con una cantidad increíble de espacio. El gimnasio, spa…genial. Aunque todo esto es de diez, sin duda lo mejor el trato. Súper amables, nos ayudaron en todo lo que necesitamos, siempre muy eficientes y ágiles. La zona (zona antigua colonia francesa) tiene un encanto especial, restaurantes alucinantes escondidos y tiendas que parecen casas…

− Nada… todo fue perfecto.

− The room concept was very unusual for a 5 star hotel. Instead of having everything on one level, the room was split across three different floors connected by stairs. While the design may seem original, it honestly felt impractical. Breakfast is à la carte menu only and some days pastries/bread were from the previous day.

Beautiful property, but lacking service

Beautiful property in the old part of Shanghai and we absolutely loved our villa, and the entire property. Very good experience in the spa, and a decent gym. Yet, our experience with the staff was relatively mixed and inconsistent. We have arranged transfers with the hotel but got very inconsistent communication (and lack of communication therefore) about departure time - as what we requested was changed by the hotel (probably with good intention as we had flight to catch) but no one communicated that with us, until by coincidence and in the last moment I double checked departure time. Finally, as we had to leave early we requested some packed breakfast which unfortunately was quite disastrous experience - from lacking items to iced instead of hot coffee - maybe due to language barrier but still, for the level of intended exclusivity of the hotel, some pretty basic things that went wrong.
